◊ Modern Scot Patchwork and diamond quilts ◊
26 September 2018
Being married to a Scottish man I was happy to be given a project from the book 'Modern Scot Patchwork: Bold Quilts Inspired by Iconic Tartans' by Kathy Allen, to make for Sewing Quarter. The book features 8 different tartans and you can make various size quilt projects from each one. The colours chosen for this quilt work really nicely with the theme, as they remind me of thistles and that beautiful Highlands palette. The also make me think of Wimbledon and the Suffragettes.
The pattern was very thorough and detailed. Written out almost like a science experiment with a few tables for the different steps. The piecing is labelled throughout, with fabrics A, B, C etc. and then sewn into lettered triplet sets and then relabelled set 1, 2, 3. Are you still with me?!

I wrote on a quilt (and it wasn't the label)! I'm sharing how I added text to a recent quilt finish and having a little catch up...
I sent this heart to Jenny for special secret quilt she's making. It's a lovely foundation paper pieced pattern by unicornharts, you can find the free Hearts fpp pattern in her shop on Craftsy. The print fabrics are from the new Autumn Vibes collection by Maureen Cracknell. You can find UK stockists through Hantex.
Despite it being a little way off, you may be already thinking of makes for the Christmas season. This quilt is from Quilting for Christmas, Leisure Arts by House of White Birches. I made it for Sewing Quarter.
The pattern is clever, the blocks are creating using positive and negative appliqué. The ornament outline is made by cutting the continuous design. It was a fun one to make and for some reason it slightly reminds me of Baymax from Big Hero 6!
happy mail kawaii case

Autumn is here, the kids are back at school and I have time to make a little something just for me! I saw the Happy Mail Kawaii Pencil Case designed by Mollie Johanson and immediately wanted to make one. This sweet case is simple to sew and easy to personalise. I'm actually going to use mine as a catch all in my handbag, for my glasses when I occasionally don't need them (the hard case I made houses my sunglasses) and any extra bits that I don't want floating around the bottom of my bag!
Choosing fabric was interesting, I didn't want to use anything too patterned because it would detract from the cute smiley face. Being me I didn't want it to be completely plain either though. When I hit on this grid print - which is Aerial Clay, Gathered by Bonnie Christine - I knew I had a winner. Rather than use cotton inside, I picked out some heathered felt bought in a recent haul to add some more structure and give the case a soft lining.
Then I had to decide on a stamp and I auditioned lots of prints that had fussy cutting potential. Funnily I found that I wasn't in the mood for anything obvious, the sort of bright quirky motif I would usually pick didn't seem right. The spirit of the fabric range seemed to suggest something calmer and ultimately I stuck with the same Gathered collection, using these fern leaves from the Simple Living print. I love the fact that print has so many nice illustrations all separated by dots, so much cutting/piecing potential!

Obviously I am slightly obsessed with fabric. There are so many lovely prints/patterns/colours available and I'm sharing some new collections with you today, along with an older find I'm treasuring and a few other goodies!
This is my kind of Christmas fabric, a collection of cute graphic prints, Noel by Swaying Lily for Cloud9 Fabrics. It is festive novelty in the best way.
The colours of this next collection really appeal to me, I really like modern brown prints (hard to find!) and when they're mixed with pink that's even better!
