We've being going through a spate of birthday invites, which seems to happen every now and then. And by 'we' I mean my children, I don't get many invites nowadays! I had some cushion inserts lying around (like you do) so I thought I would whip up some patchwork cushions. I've done some appliqued ones before but this time round I thought I'd add some stitching. My lovely friend Erin made some gorgeous cushions like this last year and they are perfect for kids.
I used some fun scraps and kept the quilting simple so the fabric really stands out.
I played around with different strips, widths and shapes of fabric and I think it makes each one more individual and the patchwork more interesting.
I could get really carried away making these so you can now get a customised hand embroidered cushion cover in my Etsy shop!

Nice! I like the addition of some hand quilting as well. It makes it so pretty!
Those are so cute! I'm sure they'll be a huge hit.
These are wonderful! What a great idea. I will keep it in mind for my kids' friends too.
So fun! What a great idea.
Cushions look great. The hand stitched names will really appeal to the recipients and are a nice touch!
Boy, the embroidery really does add punch! I bet the kids will love them.

I brought home a 12 pack of 18" cushions tonight, must stop shopping at the wholesalers!
These are adorable! Ha ha! Love Katy's comment!
Oh very nice - you realise though the more you give as gifts, the more parties your kids will be invited to and the more you will have to make...!!
Lovely pillows and a great idea to add the names! Adorable!
Such lovely work Lucy!
Oh, lovely idea. I, too, make birthday cushions with the kids name, except I appliqué mine. It never occurred to me to embroider. Now I absolutely have to try it for the next birthday. Which is next week... thankfully the kid's name has only four letters! Thank you for the inspiration. Love it!
I love adding embroidery to my quilting projects - adds such a personal touch. These cushions are great and I'm sure will be well loved. How are you doing the backs?
Those cushions are great! I hope you get lots of commissions :)
Beautiful x what school do your kids go to again? (Must remember to invite lucy's kids to next party. ....)
