For many of us basting is a chore. A boring but necessary chore. I actually enjoyed basting, all those pins and a couple of hours crawling about... some how it felt like a satisfying job. Since having the 3rd baby though my back is not as strong and when faced with basting my giant feathers quilt I just couldn't stand the thought of it (also I don't have enough pins!!). I did contemplate basting the traditional way with a good old needle and thread, and I got great advice from the ever helpful Helen, but again it is so big I just couldn't face it. Time is also a factor, considering how little free time I have I want things done quickly. Done right but done fast!
what better way to test your basting than have a baby walk over it!! |
The solution for me was to use Hobbs Heirloom Fusible wadding from Minerva Crafts. So brilliant. This HUGE quilt took me less than 40 minutes to baste. I stuck a few pins in too, only because I'm hand quilting and know I will be throwing it about so if I hadn't pinned it would have been even less time!
night shot but you get an idea of the scale - that's some of it in front of our piano |
Hobbs Heirloom Fusible would be a fantastic product to use when you are short on time, if you want to try an alternative to traditional methods or just like the idea of using something easy. It feels a tiny bit stiff but not horribly so, just enough to tell me it has worked and is stuck together. It is quilting like a dream too:

1 – 200 of 212 Newer› Newest»I'm so pleased you mentioned this fusible wadding, I had been wondering about it for ages. One question please. How did you iron it on? I'm guessing you laid your quilt sandwich out on the floor and crawled across it with an iron?
The giveaway sounds fun, I follow via Google.
My favourite haberdashery item.. has to be my very fine needles. They are actually bead embroidery needles, but are gorgeously fine with nice long eyes, perfect for my EPP projects.
This is funny, as in the US I think Haberdashery means mens wear or items ;-) However if you are meaning essentials for sewing and quilting, my favorite item would be good scissors or seam rippers.
I live in the United States, we don't have a haberdashery. Looks like a giant sewing/notions store. Would love to look around one some day. Essential -thread. And all the zippers, rulers, books you hear about - would be great to go to a store and see them and be able to buy them. 24Tangent@gmail.com

I too am from the USA. And we do not have Haberdashery. I am thinking it must be like a Joann's fabric but lots of notions. I love floss and threads and buttons and patterns.
I always use hobbs fusible these days but I pin too with larger quilts. My favourite sewing notion is Gloria - a little pair of embroidery angel scissors. She makes me smile :)

Actually, my favorite notion right now is a tiny pair of embroidery scissors that I bought with a half off coupon at Joann's. They are small enough to take with whatever hand sewing project I am working on, very sharp, and fit perfectly in a tiny pocket of my sewing kit.

My favorite essential is my rotary cutter....I don't think I would be interested in quilting at all if I had to cut squares out by hand.
hi there lucy, my fav thing are the quilting pins that have the curve in them - ready bent, saves me bending them!

Fusible batting? That works for hand quilting? I can't wait to hear more about the drape and snuggle of this quilt later.
What a great tip about the fusible batting, thanks Lucy! I could really use something innovative like this - not for any physical reason other than not being happy with my recent basting performances. My quilts have been so lumpy while machine quilting, I think I need a helping hand.
I know it's not very exciting, but my favourite sewing notion is my fabric scissors. They are a good pair of Fiskars and were my late Grandmother's. Every time I make something with them, I think of her and like to imagine that I'm doing her proud.
I'm a follower. This is great timing - I have lots of tops and absolutely HATE pinning. I have been thinking that there has to be an easier way.
Hmmmm.....my favorite notion has got to be my good hand quilting needles
my favorite notions/haberdashery items are ribbons... especially crocheted laces... sooo delicate and pretty. a feminine accent to any project.

Couldn't live without my cutting mat and rotary cutter. Not exciting as far as cutesy little notions go, but definitely an essential!

My favourite notions...right now it's these round suede "dots" that have amazing glue - sticks on my quilting finger and doesn't budge and re-usable. Also having a selection of the proper needle for the job. And good quality hand quilting thread. What I want but don't have is a selection of pearl cotton and the proper needle to try hand quilting large stitches with. I've never tried it that way and it looks beautiful in pictures I've seen.
Cotton fusible wadding. How cool is that?! My favourite notion though - hard question. Good hand sewing needles, embroidery hoops of all shapes and sizes, thread and more thread, different marking pens (soluble, air soluble, chalk, etc), and I could go on. How can a person live without haberdashery?
Gorgeous feather quilt! I'm sure the hand quilting will look great. I couldn't quilt without my rotary cutter. It is a lifesaver!
I would be lost without my rotary cutter, rulers and mat.

I'm loving your feathers quilt. Like the first commenter I was wondering how you ironed it. If you did it on the floor, did you put something underneath to protect the floor from the heat? Did you start pressing from the centre and work out? Or from one end and then down. Such neat stitches too :)
My mom's sewing scissors are the item I can't do without. I'm so glad she didn't let us kids cut paper with them, now that they are mine. I'm a very sentimental person, and using her scissors makes me feel close to her with every quilt I make.

I used that fusible wadding for the first quilt I made. It would have been brilliant, had I not fused my quilt to the ironing board! If you do plan on using fusible wadding, make sure you engage your brain before you start...
I've been using a lot of elastic recently, but that's boring, I like trims - pompom, maribou, beaded...

right now, I would have to say sharp new sewing needles, since all of mine are old (as in some of them I have had since junior high!) and dull :)
